Control Resonant Ending Explained

Full spoilers: the final fight with the Hedron, the twist in The End, Jesse’s fate, the epilogue and the questions the game leaves for a sequel or DLC.

Short answer

Spoilers. Dylan kills the Hedron inside his own mind, and because it is anchored to him he dies with it, until Jesse uses the slide projector to swap places with him. Dylan wakes up free and becomes a Bureau contractor. Jesse is left in a coma in the Oldest House, watched over by Emily Pope. The Hiss is still inside Dylan, and the game closes on the epilogue quest The Beginning.

Everything below spoils the last hours of the game. For the spoiler-free setup — who Dylan is, where Jesse went and when the game is set — read our story explainer first.

The final fight

Across the story, Dylan and Jesse trace the Patterning back to one entity, the Hedron. GamingBolt describes it as healthy and drawn to this dimension to destroy the Hiss, “even if reality itself is rewritten in the process”. In the last act it reaches Manhattan and starts Patterning the Oldest House itself.

  • The final main chapter is Defeat the Hedron. Dylan fights his way up the Oldest House to its core.
  • He breaks the Hedron’s physical form, but the entity has bound itself to his mind.
  • Overwhelmed, he tells Zoe to trigger his MCD, the Bureau’s kill switch. He tears it off instead and takes control of the Hiss inside him (AllThings.How).

The twist in The End

The last main mission, The End, takes place inside Dylan’s mind. The Board speaks to him during the fight, and he kills the Hedron there. GamingBolt says he absorbs the Hiss’s power into the Aberrant to do it.

The catch is the one the game has been setting up: the Hedron is anchored to Dylan, so killing it kills him. He collapses in a dark void, and that is where the real twist arrives.

Is Jesse dead?

No. A beam of light opens in the void and Jesse comes through it. She uses the slide projector, the Object of Power from their childhood in Ordinary, to merge with Dylan as they did at the Faults, and swaps places with him (AllThings.How). He lives; she takes the coma that should have been his.

  • Jesse ends up in Dylan’s former cell in the Oldest House, under FBC care, with Emily Pope supervising (AllThings.How).
  • GamingBolt points to an in-game report suggesting she is not dreaming and may be fully aware of her surroundings, though the Bureau says it needs more data.
  • The outcome is fixed. We found no alternate ending, and there is no way to save her in this game.

Who Jesse and Dylan are to each other, and why some players think they are the same person, is covered in the story guide: they are siblings with separate identities, linked through the Faults.

The Beginning (epilogue)

After the credits, Dylan sits with Zoe above the city; the Bureau is “loosening the leash”. The epilogue quest line has one main mission, The Beginning (PowerPyx):

  • 1. You start in Dylan’s new apartment in the Unknown.
  • 2. Travel back to the Oldest House and enter Executive Research.
  • 3. Follow the path to P6 Holding, Dylan’s old cell, and speak with Pope.
  • 4. That completes the main story and pays the Untapped Pickpocket’s Tool Artifact.

Free roam continues, so you can finish side stories, the post-game SHÜM cabinet in Dylan’s apartment and the platinum. New Game Plus opens from the Hedron drawing on the abilities wall in the Gap and uses its own save slot (Beebom). Since update 1.4.0 it can be repeated as New Game++; see the patch notes.

Ending FAQ

How does Control Resonant end? Dylan destroys the Hedron’s physical form at the Oldest House, then kills it for good inside his own mind in the last main mission, The End. The Hedron is anchored to him, so it should kill him too. Jesse arrives, trades places with him and is left in a coma, while Dylan wakes up free.

Is Jesse dead at the end of Control Resonant? No. Jesse survives but is left in a coma under FBC care in the Oldest House, watched over by Emily Pope. Dylan vows to find a way to wake her.

Are there multiple endings? Not that we or the guides we checked found. The finale plays out the same way every time, and side-story choices such as New Growth do not change it.

What happens after the credits? The epilogue mission The Beginning starts in Dylan’s new apartment in the Unknown and sends you to visit Jesse in P6 Holding, his old cell in Executive Research. Talking to Pope finishes the main story, and free roam continues.
