How to get to the Unknown
The Unknown is the last major zone to open, and you cannot walk into it from Manhattan’s streets. The route is part of the main story:
| Step | Quest | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The House in Distress | Prerequisite main mission; The Hedron Link starts right after its closing cutscene |
| 2 | The Hedron Link (main mission 9) | In the Oldest House, fight through Prime Candidate Testing and rescue Pope from the Main Test Chamber |
| 3 | The Hedron Link | Climb through the shifting-gravity hallways following the red carpet, then use the Patterned TV |
| 4 | The Hedron Link | Beat the Hedron Parallel and report to Pope: 1 Living Shard, “The First Link” trophy |
Hedron Parallel tip (PowerPyx): clear the smaller enemies around it while dodging projectiles, then hit the main body. It resists Raw damage, so lean on secondary attacks or Fire and Mold damage.
How to go back: Roof Access
This is where most players get stuck: the Unknown has no street entrance. Go into the Oldest House in Downtown, take the elevator on the floor above Pope and select Roof Access. It drops you back where you first entered the Unknown (PowerPyx).
Activate the Oldest House Rooftop fast travel door as soon as you arrive. Once Pope’s Research opens the islands, more fast travel points come online, including the Patterned Field Office before the Co-Director fight.
Unlock the Unknown map
The zone map stays hidden until you power its FBC MapKit. AllThings. How lists three relays to set first:
- Oldest House Rooftop: Ground Slam the first balloon crate and place the relay in its red circle.
- Twisted rooftops: cross the green-lit roof frame to enable fast travel, then place a relay on the rooftop dish by the Hotel sign.
- Final MapKit relay: cross the rooftops and pylons to activate the third probe and reveal the full map.
When a Gravity Well throws you to the next island, do not steer or dash too early — it is easy to overshoot the landing (AllThings.How). Update 1.4.0 also improved the Unknown’s rooftop signposting.
Pope’s Research: all 8 balloons
Pope’s Research starts automatically after The Hedron Link. Each island has a weather balloon in the sky: jump onto it, press L1/LB to cut it down, break the crate that lands, and carry each probe relay to a red circle. The minimap shows a signal icon and the antenna beeps as you get close; when it turns green, a Gravity Well opens to the next island.
| # | Island | Relays | Landmarks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Starting island | 2 | One right beside the balloon, one on the floor above |
| 2 | Northwest | 2 | Main street, then a street corner beyond red barriers |
| 3 | Northeast | 2 | Street-level alley, then a high rooftop across the street |
| 4 | Central | 2 | Beside a billboard, then a distant rooftop |
| 5 | Southwest | 2 | Street level through an alley, then by a distorted anomaly wall |
| 6 | Southeast | 2 | Street intersections; markers show on the zone map |
| 7 | South (Evac Building) | 3 | Rooftops and the plaza around the Evac Building |
| 8 | Central 2 (Point 0) | 4 | Back on the central island after a Hiss ambush |
Relay counts and order are from PowerPyx; landmarks are from AllThings.How. After the first balloon the fog lifts and the remaining islands show on the map. Pope’s Research is effectively required: you need it to reach both Hedron Link islands.
Point 0 and the Resonant Token
After the eighth island a yellow marker appears on the central island. Fight off the Hiss ambush, place the last relays to form a vortex, then go to the southern “Evac Building” island and take its Gravity Well through the central sphere. Press L3 quickly to latch on, then press L1/LB repeatedly until you fall through (PowerPyx).
Reward: a Resonant Token and the Silver trophy Budding Analyst. Take the token to the mural in the Gap to unlock a second active combat ability slot, so you can run two abilities from the same tree — Push and Ground Slam together, for example.
Sever the Hedron Links
Main mission 10. With Pope’s Research done, destroy the two Hedron Links. Each sits on a separate island reached by platforms; interact with the TV there to start the fight.
| Link | Where | Boss | How it fights |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Patterned Evac Building (south) | Hedron Factor | Spawns one heavy at a time, then weaker enemies at health checkpoints; avoid the ground mines |
| 2 | Patterned Field Office (northeast) | Hedron Proxy | Spawns brick enemies from its body; dodge their charges, then clear the ground spawns near the end |
Reward: 1 Living Shard and the “Stop it At the Source” trophy. The next main mission is Rebuild, a Retro Flashback sequence (PowerPyx).
The Unknown Resonant: Co-Director
The Unknown’s regional Resonant is the Co-Director. GamingProMax lists three requirements: Pope’s Research finished (for the Gravity Wells), Shift from Incursion Fault and Reach from Subway Fault.
- Route: from the Evac Building area ride the yellow-car vortex Gravity Well south, clear a warehouse and regroup with Rangers, hit the out-of-sync security booth, carry an electric charge to open a gate, then cross the rooftops and the hot-air-balloon plaza. Activate the Patterned Field Office fast travel before the final elevator.
- The catch: a Command meter fills on its own and kills Dylan at 100%. GamingProMax recommends at least 110 Aberrant Power and an aggressive build.
- Fight tips: dodge the purple beams sideways, kill converted Rangers first, punish the recovery after the Ranger ring spins, and watch for rocket salvos at 50% health.
- Rewards: the Command ability, the Untapped 1996 Commemorative Coin Artifact recipe, materials and Reset Items.
If Perfect Dodges never seemed to trigger in this fight, that was a bug — update 1.4.0 fixed it. See the 1.4 patch notes.
Collectibles in the Unknown
- Mysterious Dog toy: one of her seven toys is here — see dog toy locations.
- The Last Taxi: the Unknown cab is on the Evac Building island — see all taxi locations.
- SHÜM III cabinet: west, near Factory Island fast travel (Zone Level 5) — see the arcade guide.
- Freeze Frame cameras: two here, at the laundromat and the northeast construction site — see all camera locations.
- A New Directive: an Altered Item side story that starts in the Unknown and counts toward Panopticon Intern.
Unknown zone FAQ
How do you get to the Unknown in Control Resonant? The story takes you there: during main mission 9, The Hedron Link, Dylan climbs through the shifting Prime Candidate Testing halls in the Oldest House and walks through a Patterned TV into the Unknown. To go back later, take the elevator on the floor above Pope in the Oldest House and pick Roof Access, then activate the Oldest House Rooftop fast travel point.
Why can’t I get around the Unknown? Its floating islands are linked by Gravity Wells that only appear once you finish each step of the Pope’s Research side story. Cut down each weather balloon, break the crate, and place its probe relays on the red circles; the antenna light turns green and a Gravity Well opens to the next island.
What does Pope’s Research give you? A Resonant Token and the Budding Analyst trophy (PowerPyx). Take the token to the mural in the Gap to unlock a second active combat ability slot.
Is Pope’s Research required? Effectively yes. PowerPyx and AllThings. How both say you have to progress it to reach the two Hedron Link islands for the main mission Sever the Hedron Links.
Who is the Unknown Resonant boss? The Co-Director. GamingProMax says the fight has a Command meter that fills on its own and kills Dylan at 100 percent, so you need enough damage to finish it in time. Update 1.4.0 fixed a bug that made Perfect Dodges in this fight nearly impossible.
